How does the Internet works? A Simple Overview

How does the Internet works? A Simple Overview

How does the internet works? You might have thought about it many times, right? Being in the 21st Century, where the Internet has become an integral part of our life it is hardly impossible to stay untouched from this question.

But have you ever stopped and tried to find out how does the internet works, really? Or you just wondered if it might be some technical stuff, a secret language between two devices joined by some magical force or satellites?

And then went back to your phone, scrolling, and browsing??

Well, then it is time for you to know more about how does the internet works and understand different components related to it because the internet has now become an inseparable part of our life. It’s like the best friends of ours without whom we cannot imagine living life…

Let’s take a little time knowing a bit more about the internet (your best friend). This Content (How does the internet works) would be a better option for you to have a more happy and optimized life on the Internet.

It’s pretty simple by the way!

Let’s Begin: What Is the Internet?

The Internet is a vast, sprawling collection of networks that connect. It is a worldwide community of networks that transmits a variety of data and media across interconnected devices.

The job of the internet is to transfer data from one place to another just like a postal service. Really??

The Internet has two major components: the hardware part, which includes cables, routers, servers, devices, your computer, satellites, and other devices. which are connected to create a network of networks…

Some of the elements like Your phone, computer, are called clients whereas the machines which store all the information we seek on the internet are called servers.

The second component of the internet is the protocol. Protocols are the sets of rules that machines follow to complete given tasks.

Without a common set of protocols to be followed by all the machines connected on the internet, communication between devices couldn’t happen.

How does the Internet works to find your computers??

Internet Address (IP Address)

There are billions of devices connected to the internet, All the computers connected to the Internet must have a unique address. This address is known as an IP address which stands for Internet Protocol.

A Service Provider (ISP) provides you with a temporary IP address when you are connected to the Internet through an ISP.

In case you are connected to the Internet from a local area network (LAN), your computer might have a permanent IP address or it might obtain a temporary one from a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server.

However, you are connected to the Internet, your computer must have a unique IP address.

 Domain Name System (DNS)

Domain Name System is an important part of making the Internet easier to use. Domain names are used to use symbolic names for servers instead of numeric Internet Protocol addresses so that it is easy for the end-user to remember.

By adding a service that maps domain names to IP addresses, we can move servers from one Internet connection to another connection without requiring users to manually change their configurations to connect to a server.

When the IP Address of the computer is not known or where to find the location of the computer by the web browser, DNS is like a phone book having the address and name of the contact computer.

The DNS works as a distributed database that keeps track of the computer’s names and their corresponding IP addresses on the Internet.

The Concept: Protocols and Packets

The pocket-sized  packets

A packet is a small segment of a larger message. Each packet contains both data and information about that data.

When data gets sent over the Internet, it is first broken up into smaller packets, which are then translated into bits.

Packets are sent across the Internet using a technique called packet switching.

When you send an email or browse the Web, the data you send is split up into lots of small pieces (packets) that travel separately over the Internet.

When the packets get to your device, it arranges them according to the Principle of the protocols and helps the internet to perform its work better.

It’s kind of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

Protocols: The most integral part

As already stated above, Protocols are sets of rules that machines follow to complete tasks. It is the responsibility of the protocol to transfer the data and information and manage packets as needed. For eg: There is HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) which is used to view Websites through a browser. IP( Internet protocol) is used for sending Packets from network to network.

The Transport Control Protocol (TCP) works with IP to ensure the transfer of data is dependable and reliable. This helps to make sure that no packets are lost, packets are reassembled in proper sequence, and there’s no delay negatively affecting the data quality.

How does the internet works? In your life…

Do you know how does the internet works When you type in a web address into your browser?

Let us have a look.

illustration on how does internet works

When you surf something on your browser or type any web address or URL ( Uniform Resource Locator) on your browser then the query is pushed to your ISP. Then,  your browser looks up the IP address for the domain name that was typed into your search engine through DNS.

DNS then does its job and translates the domain name into a number-based IP address. Like: youtube.com becomes 23.65.75.88

Your browser now sends an HTTP request to the target server and requests to send a copy of the website to the client using a protocol like TCP/IP.

The server then approves the request and sends an approval message to your computer. And sends website files to the browser in the form of data packets.

After that, the data packets are reassembled by the browser to make it user friendly which is loaded by the website and it allows us to browse, engage, entertain, and learn. Internet works in a fraction of seconds.

And we enjoy our browsing time. Happily!!

Conclusion

Now, we know how does the internet works. Right??

The Internet works through the process of data transferring and data sharing with the help of different protocols, Hardware, software, and network devices.

However, the Internet is always evolving and changing. Discovered at first as a defense department report project, the Internet has come a long way and is still evolving to something better and bigger.

Today, more than three billion people are estimated to use the internet and by 2030, 7.5 billion internet users and 500 billion devices are projected to be connected to the internet.

And we might never know exactly how does the internet works and what the future of the internet might look like.

But, throughout history, the Internet has become an important part of our human civilization and has kept unity and peace in the world connecting people and places with its system.

And we,  knowing about the internet a little bit more hoped to utilize it a little better and be grateful to be the part of this enormous connection system unleashing stocks of opportunity every day.
